Point and Shoot or SLR (single lens reflex) ?

A point-and-shoot camera, also called a compact camera, is a still camera designed primarily for simple operation. Most of them use focus free lenses or auto focus for focusing, automatic systems for setting the exposure options, and have flash units built in.
Point-and-shoots are by far the best selling type of separate camera, as distinct from camera phones. They are popular with people who want to use camera for vacations, parties, reunions and other events. The two cameras that are displayed below from Amazon ( Canon powershot SX130ISs , Nikon Coolpix L22)which are fairly good point and shoot cameras .

As distinct from SLR

Point-and-shoot cameras are distinguished from single-lens reflex cameras (SLRs) in several respects,  point-and-shoot film cameras, and many digital ones, use a viewfinder. The image that the photographer sees is not the same image that passes through the primary lens of the camera (that is, the lens that projects the image onto the film or, in the case of digital cameras, the image sensor). Rather, the image in the viewfinder passes through a separate lens. SLRs, on the other hand, have only one lens, and a mirror diverts the image from the lens into the viewfinder; that mirror then retracts when the picture is taken so that the image can be recorded on the film or sensor.

The Advantages and disadvantages of point and shoot cameras
The advantages compared to SLR:
  1. The cameras are sleek, looks trendy and easy to carry .
  2. Easy to setup and use and various shooting modes makes it easier to shoot .
  3. The cameras are cheaper with no extra cost .
  4. You get a fairly good zoom with the fixed lens .
The disadvantages compared to SLR:
  1. Lesser picture clarity .
  2. Manual focus is not available .
  3. Distance focusing absent .
  4. Modifications while shooting absent , for example changing the exposure, shutter speed etc as needed .
  5. Upgradation of camera like adding lenses for better photography cannot be done .
